Organic foods have increased in popularity over the last several decades. Many consumers believe that organic foods are tastier and healthier. Plus, organically grown products versus conventionally grown are believed to be better for the environment because of the lack of chemicals used in production. Spinach is one of the most popular organic foods purchased today. Spinach and other greens, like kale, offer many nutrients with very low calories. It’s super good for you whether it’s cooked or eaten raw. Did you know spinach is an excellent source of fiber, vitamin K, vitamin A, vitamin C, folate, and manganese? It is also a very good source of vitamin B6, riboflavin, magnesium, potassium, and iron, and a good source of calcium and vitamin E.
Now that we know how great spinach is for us, the question remains, should you choose organic spinach for your meals? What you may not realize is that spinach, along with other leafy greens, are often sprayed with nearly 20 kinds of pesticides before being tossed in our salads and cooked in our foods. The biggest motivation for consumers to buy organic produce is to eliminate foods sprayed with pesticides and chemical fertilizers. If this is you, then buying organic spinach over conventional may be a great way to introduce organic produce into your diet!
Here are four simple ways to cook spinach:
- Steam it:
Steaming spinach might be one of the simplest preparations! Simply place your prepared spinach, roughly a pound, into the steamer. Allow it to cook for 3 to 5 minutes until it is tender. Want to spice it up? Top it off with parmesan cheese and your favorite nuts!
- Saute it:
Throw your spinach into a skillet over medium heat with olive oil. Cook it for 5 minutes and then add seasonings like salt, pepper, onion and garlic. Then cook it for another 5 minutes and you have a bowl of healthy, delicious cooked spinach!
- Cream it:
While not the healthiest of preparations, it is a great way to spruce up your spinach (and maybe get the kids to enjoy it too). There are many recipes for this preparation, but try the below for a simple, quick preparation.
1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add spinach and cook until wilted, stirring constantly. Remove from the skillet and drain in a colander squeezing out as much liquid as possible.
2. Melt the 1/4 cup butter in the skillet over medium heat. Add minced garlic and onions; cook and stir until tender (about 5 minutes). Add the spinach and stir in 1 1/4 cups of heavy cream. Sprinkle in a cup of shredded mozzarella cheese and stir to melt and coat the spinach. Once the provolone has melted, stir in a half cup of grated Parmesan cheese and continue to cook and stir until thickened.
- Boil it:
Another simple way to cook spinach is by simply boiling it. Once a pot of water is boiling, add your spinach. Leave it in the water for one minute. Season afterward with garlic, salt and pepper!
